I saw the Godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown last night at the 9.30 Club.

Damn it was funky, it was fun, it made you move and it was one continuous beat for 2 hours +

He’s 72 and he still knows how to get on down and ‘Bust Loose’

If you get a chance download some of his stuff and check it out. The style of music originates from DC so it was good to be here to see it. There were horns, a damn loud bass drum and a bit of Hip-hop thrown in. Awesome fun!

And this afternoon?

What I’m doing now… August 23, 2006

Ok, enough of banal posts and useful information. I’ll give everyone a bit of an idea of where I am at right now.

At the end of this month I would have been here 7 months. That’s 7 months out of the 11 months that I originally planned to be here. I am starting to see that those those 4 months are going to fly by and before I know it I will have to make a few big decisions in my life.

What are those decisions? Well, without getting into it too deeply, basically I have to decide a path for my life. But if this DC jaunt has taught me anything it is that I see myself moving away from the everyday 9 to 5 life and trying to find something new to consume myself with.

Back to the decisions…

  • Where do I l ive when I return to Australia?
  • Where do I work when I return to Australia?
  • Do I return to Australia for good at Christmas time as I was originally planning?
  • Do I look to travel somewhere else and work?
  • Am I ready to start this next chapter in my life?
  • Do I take risks and start a new venture that could potentially change my life?

These are all things that are going to be on my mind for the next 4 months, and to be honest I don’t want to think about it right now.

The only thing I know for sure is that I will be in Australia for the week before Christmas and over the Christmas break.

Of course, I miss the kids and I miss family. I miss Australia in general, but there are plenty of things that I will miss from this place as well and I don’t know if I’ll be ready to move on from them come Christmas…

But I need some inspriation. I need something that is going to make my decision easier.

Before anyone starts to say/think the obvious, if I did decide to return to the US it would not be for much longer. 6 months is what I was thinking.

I don’t know…. Really I don’t. 4 months might end up being all I want and need in this place and I will happily return home.

Maybe I won’t know until December, but shit, I wish I knew now.

A lot of it comes down to where I’m living. Which is still, NOWHERE.

I am dogsitting a cute labradoodle at the moment. That ends on the 2nd of Sept. I am then cat-sitting for a week, and then I am back to looking.

If I am still in this situation when I return to Australia then really I think my decision is made. I don’t think I want to be coming back to DC without a place to live. It’s just not doable for much longer. I need some stability if I am to stay. But lots can happen in 4 months, so I just don’t know if I can make my final decision just yet.

I dunno. I am just brain-dumping right now, but I would be happy to hear anyone’s thoughts or opinions. If I don’t like ’em I’ll just delete them. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hehehe

Hope everyone is well!

Yeah. I’m starting a band.

I am….one day.

And thanks to inspiration from a co-worker, we have a band name.

Now..I thought I should put it out there now. I’m taking it. It’s ours. YOU can’t use it.

We are called…

“Girt by Shit”

There. I’ve done it. Sucked in. It’s ours. Go away.

From the actor that brought us one of my favourite movies ever, Garden State, we now have The Last Kiss

Zach Braff is awesome. This movie looks awesome. Writted by Paul Haggis, who brought us Crash (which I saw on the plane back to Australia and was awesome).

I may be getting old. I may be getting sentimental, but just watching this preview made me feel a little mushy inside.

…by a meme. Again. It’s a book one. I might struggle.

I haven’t really read that many books in the last couple of years, but I will see how I go.

Thanks Zoe!

1. One book you have read more than once

The Hobbit. Well duh I hear you say, but hey, it’s probably the book that I have read the most in my life.

2. One book you would want on a desert island

The complete collection of TinTin comic books. Stupid idea you think? Maybe, but I used to read them over and over again as a kid and never got sick of them…..The perfect mindless read till you die books…

3. One book that made you laugh

Mort by Terry Pratchett. My favourite Pratchett and the introduction of Death to the Discworld. Funny stuff ๐Ÿ™‚

4. One book that made you cry

This is almost embarrassing, but hey, I guess books can make us tear up. It was back in High School and it was Of Mice and Men. I was really deep into that book.

5. One book you wish you had written

The Da Vinci Code. Only so I could be as loaded as Dan Brown.

6. One book you wish had never been written

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. Biggest load of crap I have ever read a bit of in my life.

7. One book you are currently reading

Someone gave me 4 Dan Brown books, and I am battling my way through them. Following the flock and all that. I have just started Angels & Demons after reading Digital Fortress (lame at best).

8. One book you have been meaning to read

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

I like the other side…of everything.

9. One Book That Changed Your Life

Easy. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

I read it on the train from New York to Washington DC when I first arrived in this country. It has had a fair effect on the way I think and live everyday. It’s one of those books that I think everyone gets something out of. A classic.

I’m going to tag….. techne. If she actually reads my blog…..which she might not, but hey.

The Greatest Current Rock Band in the World. August 16, 2006

Dave belting one outYes. They are.

I saw the Foo Fighters for the 2nd time in 9 months last night and they were amazing.

It was an acoustic set in a small hall. Dave Grohl came out by himself and sat down with just the acoustic guitar. His voice was clear and sharp and I was impressed. He really can sing. After hearing him scream his lungs out in the rock shows, it’s hard to know that he has such a voice.

The Fooeys were joined by a Piano/Organ/Piano Accordion player, a percussionist, a vioinist and another guitarist making them an 8 piece band and they really belted the songs out. Even though it was acoustic they really rocked some of their older songs out and it was a pity I was sitting down for the whole gig.

They played old songs and new songs (off their acoustic CD from their new album) and Dave talked a little about the early days of his career with Nirvana.

Fantastic show. Check it out if you can!

Dave rocking out

Thanks to Ampersand Duck, there’s a new sort of meme that fits right into my mood of tonight.

Tonight i went and saw a movie by myself for the first time ever. I am not sure why I haven’t ever done it before, but I just seemed to think it was either extremely sad, or a lonely thing to do.

In the end it was neither. I enjoyed the movie, “A Scanner Darkly” and then I enjoyed reading half a book, “By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept “, in Kramerbrooks. A great little bookshop in Dupont Circle. I am going to go back in the morning and read the rest.

But back to the meme.

A list of 12 things that keep me alive and enjoying this world we live in…

In no particular order:

1. The sounds and smells of the ocean.

2. The warm sun on any day of the year.

3. Music. All kinds. Anywhere. Anytime.

4. Watching children play. Sharing in their innocence.

5. Alone time. The chance to be within myself and enjoy it.

6. Smiling to myself and watching others smile

7. My team winning.

8. The possibility of love.

9. A book that immerses me and influences the way I look at the world.

10. A thunderstorm

11. The feeling in my mouth after a spicy meal.

12. The smell of a freshly cut lawn.

Like Ducky, this list could change from day to day, but it includes things that will always be there no matter where I am in my life.

2.17am. Time to sleep….

Quizno’s vs Subway August 12, 2006

Apparently there is a Quizno’s in Australia, but I had never seen it until I came to the States.

I have eaten a fair bit of Subway in my life, and even though it’s pretty good and ok for you, there is always that ‘Subway’ ™ taste about it wherever you go. I like the fact that Subway had started toasting the subs just before I left. Mmm…Melty..

So anyway, here in the states there is another sub chain called Quizno’s, and this place it very similar, but they have been toasting their subs all along, and they also have different sizes to Subway and offer other things like Bread Bowls. I have actually preferred them to Subway since being here, even though you’re still paying 8 bucks for a sandwich, but anyway…

Now watch this

Now does that thing look like the most disgusting thing you have ever seen in your life? I have seen this ad many times and everytime, even if I’m hungry or not it just makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

Our good friend Mr McD had one yesterday and I looked at it..looked at him and said, “So, that’s one of those brisket things hey?”, “yeah.”, “How is it?”, “Yeah…pretty crap”

Done and done.

Back to Subway I go…

The 'Infinity' Pool

Sunrise and the Gazebo

Yes, these are my photos. I was worried a little that the brochure shots might not be accurate. I shouldn’t have worried!

This is the view out of my room…

View from the Room

It was awesome. Just some of the best 5 days I have ever had.

Mexican people are wonderful. We went for a bike ride through a small Mexican town and we were saying ‘Hola’ to everyone and they were waving and all. We visted some freshwater pools (cenotes) which were absolutely gorgeous. Deep fresh water that you could dive into from rocks or ropes. Families were down there having a picnic or just relaxing. And this was in the middle of a Mexican jungle in the Riviera. Panthers are around!

The resort was better than i could have ever hoped. “All Inclusive” has become the 2 best words in the English Language! Food was great, drinks were plentiful and the pools and facilities were top notch. There were some bad reviews for this place, but I can’t believe anyone could have a bad time there.

Click on any of those photos to check some more photos I took whilst there.

Now it’s back to real life again. I don’t want to work, I want to swim on a beach forever!

We tried to stay another night but it was going to cost too much to change the flight. Dammit!

Oh well….there’s always next time!

In 18 hours I will be….

…lounging by this pool.. or…

….relaxing on this pool…..or…

…sleeping under one of these tree umbrellas…or…

…looking out over the ocean from this rooftop…or…

…sitting on one of those underwater barstools whilst drinking a cocktail….or…

….swimming in this infinity pool.

Yes, for the next 5 days I will be in Cancun, Mexico at this place.

All inclusive…all you can eat…all you can drink…all you can lounge around in the sun and in the clear blue water..

So…do I pass?

See ya next Tuesday!
